Unique Kitchens: Designing your Home’s Heart
Specialising in cupboard design of all kinds and with over two decades of experience behind them, Cape Town HOMEMAKERS Expo exhibitor, Unique Kitchens will be sharing their expertise at the show.
We spoke to Penny to find out more about the company.
When and how did Unique Kitchens start?
The company started out with 2 friends who wanted to earn extra money to pay for their weddings and progressed from there – it was formally registered in 1997 and known as BARCO Cupboards. After tragedy struck when a partner passed away, the name was changed to Unique Kitchens.
Which product from your range is your favourite?
We specialise in the design, manufacture and installation of all types of cupboards in various finishes. Although White Duco is still very popular, clients love the beautiful Melamine colours currently available. Though the standard run of the mill items keeps the business going, the more challenging/interesting items still remain a favourite.
What makes Unique Kitchens stand out?
It is our aim to provide clients with custom made products are reasonable prices. We pride ourselves that we can manufacture any joinery item a client requires – usually we receive pictures, sketches or just a vague description as a base.
Where do you find inspiration?
Although each client’s project is unique, we keep tabs on international trends and try to incorporate it in current projects by visiting international trade shows. Working as a team with clients, interior decorators and architects keeps one’s mind open to various styles and needs.
What trends are you seeing at the moment?
Whites and greys are still very popular in Melamine and Duco, but there is a definite interest in different finishes – the combination with metals and other textures is becoming more prominent.
Which item can a home not do without?
A practical user-friendly kitchen where family and friends can mingle is a necessity!
What advice do you have for homeowners who are looking to redecorate or renovate their homes?
Decide in advance on the look and feel you want for the project. If the budget is tight, rather spend a bit more on a stunning kitchen and practical bathroom cupboards, whilst planning the bedroom, study and playroom cupboards for a later stage.
Why should people visit your stand at HOMEMAKERS Expo?
Clients can upgrade their knowledge on trendy, nice-to-have items – dreaming can turn into planning.
You can visit Unique Kitchens’ stand for chat at Cape Town HOMEMAKERS Expo at CTICC until Sunday, 1 September.
