Listen to How To Save With Frugal Living Tips in Afrikaans:
Life is expensive. Now more than ever.
We have researched and come up with a few frugal living tips to help you save some cash now, so you can have a couple of rands extra to spend this holiday season.
Cut out the costly coffee (and bring your own water).
Your one R30 rand takeaway coffee a week might not feel like a total splurge, but ditching that habit for a couple of months can really add up. And every undrunk cappuccino now becomes a seaside ice cream or beer in December. This also goes for buying water. Get a reusable bottle and fill it up at home.
This doesn’t mean you should be breaking the bank for meat replacements or fancy plant-based meals once a week. A simple sandwich (cheese and tomato) or even just scrambled egg on toast is a perfectly fine Monday night dinner, especially after a weekend of indulgence.
Instead of just relying on a geyser timer, turn down your geyser thermostat. Summer is here, and a cooler shower can even boost your immune system. Taking shorter, colder showers can even be a way to live a greener life.
It is said that if you stand close to King Charles, arguably one of the most privileged men in the world, you can clearly see visible signs of wear and mending on his clothing. Invest in a sewing kit and extend the life of your clothing. Fast fashion is a toxic thing, and you really don’t need new jeans because of one rip.
Don’t spend exorbitant amounts on snazzy designer clothing your kid will only wear for a couple of months. Find a circle of parents with kids of different ages and set up a hand-me-down exchange program. Kids will learn about sustainability and community, and you can stop spending thousands on clothes that will just be outgrown by the end of the year.

Just because you don’t swipe your card every time you scroll, or watch something on the television, doesn’t mean it’s free! Data, internet, and subscription costs are a real thing. And they can add up. But you know what’s free? Reading a book. It’s also much better for your mental health and will set an excellent example for those around you. Pick one day a week when you only use non-electronic entertainment. If you join a library or book club, you can even save on the cost of books!
Small changes can mean that your small change becomes big bucks and that holiday spoiling you are craving becomes a possibility.
