You can have a unique chance to view the new range by visiting the Cape Town HOMEMAKERS Expo from 29 August to 1 September at the CTICC.
Handmade Success
Mervyn Gers has been interested in sculpture and ceramics from a young age. In 2008 he made a career-changing decision to dedicate himself to the craft. He started by setting up a home based studio in Oranjezicht with one assistant and a single kiln.
His business grew exponentially and is now housed in a three- storey studio in Paarden Island. The studio boasts 13 kilns and employs 45 staff – a sustainable job creation success story!
Handmade in the studio in Cape Town, each product passes through 22 pairs of hands between the clay studio and dispatch area.
Over the years, Mervyn has won numerous awards and his studio was featured in Louis Vuitton’s 2014 Cape Town Guide as one of the ten places you simply must visit. Says Gers: “Working with clay has opened up a whole new world for me as the possibilities are endless. I love to give my imagination free reign and every hour spent in the studio teaches me something – about clay, about life and the creative process.”
The studio specialises in creating bespoke tableware. Mervyn’s greatest influence comes from the far Northern Cape where he was born and bred. “It offers such natural beauty – the landscapes, desert sand dunes, sapphire blue sky, and greens of khaki-bush and camel thorn trees.”
