Why a headboard is an excellent place to start.
Make your bedroom dreams come true
A good night’s sleep begins during the day. To truly transform your “good enough” bedroom into your “better than ever” happy place, you’ll simply have to follow our guidelines.
Let’s start at the top. (of the bed)
Beds have come a long way. No, were not doing a deep dive into the ancient history of beds going back to grass and mud matrasses of prehistoric times. So lets just leave it at this: Beds have changed, they are more versatile than ever and this means your bed is the perfect place to live out your design dreams and make this your comfort zone.
Headboards are a way to do this without disrupting your hard-won matrass/pillow/bedding-balance that took so long to perfect. By redoing your headboard, you can get all the joy of a new bed without the time and investment needed to find the perfect, lived (slept)-in combination of comfort and luxury.
Big bed, bit of space?
Beds have gotten bigger. Until a couple of years ago, normal people did not sleep on king sized beds unless they were on holiday and paid extra for the privilege. Even a few years ago, it was still standard for most homes to be built to accommodate double beds instead of the supersized sleep monsters we have now come to love.
Whether you have the big-boy bed that crowds your whole room or whether you’re still sticking to the standard double you got as a student, the real thing to remember is that it’s not about size, it’s about proportion. (and how you use it…)
According to those in the know, getting the right headboard is all about the fit. Regardless of the size of your bed, certain proportions matter. A headboard should always be slightly broader than the bed it is intended for.
Depending on the style you are going for, this overland in breadth can be as little as about 10cm on a side, or the headboard can overlap and encompass the side tables as well. This is more of an aesthetic than a practical consideration, so the choice is up to you. On the other hand, the hight of the headboard (the part that’s visible above the matrass surface, against the wall) should be considered carefully. In general, this part should be high enough as well as sturdy enough, to allow you to sit up comfortably in bed without the edge digging into your neck or back.
This will also influence your choice of material.
As beautiful as an artistically woven wicker headboard or unfinished wooden plank headboard can be, these are not great for sitting up against to enjoy your first cup of coffee. A softer, less abrasive material, like polished wood, padded plywood or simple upholstery will offer much more comfort and can still look great.
These are all things you have to take into account as you start shopping around for the headboard that will grant your wildest bedroom wishes…
