The true value or friendship
“Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: ‘What! You too? I thought I was the only one.” Celebrate Friendship Day.
C.S. Lewis
Celebrate friendship.
30 July is International Friendship Day, and we think it is worth celebrating!
Be friends with your space
You can’t pour from an empty vessel – you need to love yourself before you love another…These cliches may seem cheesy, but it is true – You can only give love, friendship, and kindness if you are full of love, friendship and kindness. This is why you need to be in love with your space. Love yourself, love your home. whether this means going into your garden, thriving in your kitchen or treating yourself in your own home-spa bathroom. Whatever you have to do to create a happy place in your home, do it! This is all part of being your own best friend.
“Come and sit a spell”
This is a phrase that comes form the American Deep South. Its an old phrase, meaning: Come here, slow down, join me, let’s chat on my porch.
Friendship is a place of comfortable silences, where you don’t have to make Smalltalk. But it is also the place where you can open your heart and speak your mind. Front porches aren’t really a thing in South Africa, however, we can still have the joy of sitting with a friend.
Whether your friendship is built around braai, books or baking, we suggest you create a “sitting place”.
We love these outdoor seating spaces, reading nook and kitchen seating inspirations. Find the one that works for you and dedicate a space to good talks and building relationships.
V(G)alentines day/Friendsgiving/Margarita nights
It seems like the USA has this whole friendship thing covered. We love the idea of revamping a holiday into a friendship celebration.
The first rule of these friendship days is: there are no rules. Whether you do them on the actual days or you simply pick any day and make it special, is up to you. Secondly, go as big or as basic as you want. Weekend break in a 5-star hotel? Or slippers and pyjamas on the sofa – you do you.
Some of our favourite friendship activities include:
Clay café offers a pitch-up-and-paint situation, with a whole menu of food and drinks to order from, and shelves of blank pottery to paint and glaze/ This is the perfect outing for when you want to get creative without creative a mess at home. They have lots of venues around the country so simply make a reservation and go have some fun.
If you are willing to embrace some of the madness though, why not go thrifting for old artworks, get some paint, stickers and stamps and spend an evening chatting and “revamping” the artworks with your own inspired additions? Thrift and paint parties are affordable fun ways to get creative and still spend time with friends. Simply go to a pawn shop, or flea market, buy cheap cheesy artworks, and then spend an evening improving it with friends.
Whatever you choose to do, we think it is important to understand the role that a healthy friendship can have on your mood, wellbeing and quality of live.
Having a friend and being a friend is one of the greatest joys this world can offer, so send that message, check in and set a date to celebrate what you have.
