House Arrest And The Psychology Of Home
The word home is a powerful one. It conjures different images tinted by our unique perspectives, culture and memory. It means something different to each of us and there are certain emotions it will evoke for most like; family, happiness, comfort, pride, safety and love. And most recently, a nationwide lockdown. House arrest is not something any of us ever thought would be our reality but here we are. Spending so much time at home can be compared to a new relationship.
At first, it is all love and cuddles – we cannot get enough of each other. Then reality sets in and we notice all the flaws. Next follows the fix-it phase and eventually acceptance and deep love.
As fixing homes is what we do best, let’s explore the fix-it phase. As with everything in life knowing where we’ve been is needed to know where we’re going.
Caves to Cameras
Homes have evolved from a primal shelter protecting us from the elements and predators to an extension of our ego. Today our homes not only need to serve all those primal needs but it should also be Instagram ready.
Your home is an extension of you, it speaks of where you are as a person, as a member of a family and a society.
Is your Home Telling your Story?
Take a walk through your home. Pretend that you are a visitor and take the time to view it from a stranger’s perspective. What story is your house telling about the people who live there?
Sanctuary or Sanatorium
When we talk about turning your home into your sanctuary it is not necessarily having a zen spa experience every time you walk through the front door. It is creating a stage for the movie that is your life, a place where you are yourself.
You can’t be the star in someone else’s life movie. You cannot live on someone else’s movie set, make it your own!
The Upside of Lockdown
Make the most of this time. Fall in love with your home again and turn it into your sanctuary – a place of pride. When we can connect with those outside our homes again, we want to invite them back inside.
