According to many health professionals, sitting is the new smoking. This should not come as a surprise.
Between working at our desks, commuting and then “relaxing” in static ways such as watching some form of screen for entertainment, most people can spend up to 11 hours each day completely stationary.
While the truth is that smoking is still far worse for your health than simply sitting down (OBVIOUSLY), that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be looking at ways to make the time that you do spend sitting down, as healthy as possible!
The main risk with sitting all day is the fact that it leaves you completely immobile.
This can increase your risk of stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Not because sitting down causes it, but because immobility, in general, is bad for the human body.
One way to combat this is to invest in some form of “static movement equipment” like an under-desk peddler or stepper.
We’ve found an affordable option that can also be used for your arms.
Another brilliant way to be more mobile while working is to swap out your standard office chair for an exercise ball chair. Working from home, means you’re not permanently visible to your colleagues so you won’t have to endure the taunts about your new seating arrangement…so go for it! Get the ball chair and fix your posture while strengthening your core!
This option is height adjustable, and the ball can be removed for exercising.
Hydrate. Most of us don’t drink nearly enough water. This cheap and playful desktop water dispenser will have you hitting your hydration target before lunchtime. (Increased loo-breaks will also force you to move during your otherwise sedentary workday.)

Air quality matters. While most corporate offices have some sort of air purifying system, due to Occupational Health and Safety requirements, most homes do not. If you find yourself sneezing, dealing with a blocked nose more often than usual and living in stuffy air as you slave away at your desk, the time has come to invest in your lung health…Cheap air purifiers do little else than swirl around fragrant oils, but this one comes with HEPA filters and a proven track record of cleaner air.
Finally – one of the main benefits of working from home is the fact that you are no longer wasting time on a commute. Decide to use this extra time wisely. Go for a walk each day. 20 minutes outside will be immensely beneficial to your health, and you’ll still be home earlier than usual.
