You’re going to roll your eyes at this one, I just know it. Flowers as part of interior design? How original!
Well, you’ll just have to roll your eyes back and have a look at these compelling arguments for having flowers in your home.
Of course, humans have been using flowers to decorate themselves and their homes since time immemorial. But now we have the proof to show exactly why that’s a good thing.
Looking at Flowers decreases fatigue and anxiety.
The Journal of Physiological Anthropology published a compelling study. The study found that flowers can have marked beneficial effects on office workers’ sense of relaxation.
Data from this study support the presence of physiological and psychological relaxing effects of being exposed to flowers.
Exposure to Flowers helps with Focus.
The University of Michigan did a study to prove the Attention Restoration Theory. This theory provides an analysis of the kinds of experiences that lead to recovery from such fatigue. Natural environments are particularly rich in the characteristics necessary for restorative experiences.
This means that being surrounded by flowers can actually help you recover from feeling tired. Which then allows you to focus on the task at hand more quickly. It doesn’t matter if this task is work, cleaning, cooking or just spending time with the family. It’s always good to focus on sharing the best parts of yourself with those you love.
Flowers are Good Medicine
And not in the way you’re thinking. Journal of Integrative and Complementary Medicine suggested the health benefits of having flowers in your room.
The findings of this study confirmed the therapeutic value of plants in the hospital environment. They are used as an effective complementary medicine for surgical patients.
All of this means that to be healthier, happier and less stressed, consider integrating flowers into your space.
Last month we spent some time in green living rooms and figured out how to do maximalism right. We also incorporated optimistic earthy tones into our spaces.
This month is the last month of 2022’s design trend discussions. And we will be taking the best parts of floral inspiration to inject some life into your home while we dream about spring.
Floral Inspiration 1: Through Art
You don’t need to decorate every corner of your home with flowers or plants to introduce floral elements to your space. Choose elegant art pieces like posters, prints or photographs that feature floral themes. The upside of these kinds of artworks is that you can coordinate the pieces with your colour scheme since floral art is available in any possible colour variation that you can imagine.
If you have incorporated maximalism as per our last article, there will be floral art to support that style. If you decide to go vintage, flowers are some of the most common art elements in antique store paintings. If you prefer geometric interior design, there are even stylised floral works that will work with your style.

Floral Inspiration 2: English Cottage
Imagine a typical English cottage. You will certainly have a very clear feeling of flowers, granny-style décor elements and soft furnishings. What is wonderful about this particular aesthetic, is that it is not limited to what you can do in the lounge or bedroom. The cottage aesthetic is a way of life and can be pulled through to things such as preserving your own fruits or vegetables, sewing your own clothing or even creating your own art.
Take it one step further when introducing floral pieces with the cottage aesthetic by sourcing fresh flowers from your own garden.
There are many ways to make fresh flowers part of your design language without spending a year’s worth of money.
Floral Inspiration 3: Colour Concepts
If you are not partial to floral elements in your home, you can still take the lead from flora. Do this by using naturally occurring flower colours in your design.
Flowers come in every possible shade or hue. But the most important lesson we can learn from them is to disregard colour matching.
If you’ve had the chance to walk through a field of wildflowers, you will realise that nature doesn’t really care. So what if the yellows are growing next to the purples or next to the reds?
Introduce little pops of colour in any combination throughout your home. Thereby bringing the best parts of floral design into your space.
