Give your love a shelf life with Jars of Hope
Food inflation is squeezing the life out of many households.
The ever-rising cost of food is eating away at many South African budgets, forcing people to make desperate plans to keep their bellies full this winter.
Stories of parents skipping meals to give kids a bit more and communities having to come together to ensure that their most vulnerable members don’t starve are prevalent everywhere.
With this in mind, we want to shine some light on two extremely worthy causes, aimed at providing food security for those in need.
Firstly, lets talk about Jars of Hope.
There is the initial Jar of Hope that ask you to place any useful items like toiletries, a pair of warm socks, a treat or other necessities in a jar and pass it on to a person in need.
Secondly, there is the so called “Botteltjie-sop” (Bottle soup) project.
This project grew from the Jar of Hope movement during lockdown to provide food security for those in need, with a long shelf life.
Each jar can provide a warm, nutritious meal for a family of four, and take the stress out of one day of feeding loved ones.
This is a wonderful project to adopt, as it is easy, affordable, and scalable. You can make one jar, or you can ask friends and family to help and set a challenge to make 10, 20 or even 50 jars and pass them on.

Sock it up.
If you don’t necessarily have the time to make a Jar of Hope, you can also look into Food Socks.
These pre-made “socks” (pouches) provide delicious and nutritious meals that can once again feed a family of four without breaking the bank. Whether you buy for your own household or support the initiative to pass on the food security to those less fortunate, this is a worthy cause for winter and a convenient, local and healthy way to give a little bit of love and comfort to those who need it most.
