Find the best “backpacker’s” accommodation in South Africa
Why “backpack”?
Traveling on a shoestring budget internationally builds character, gives you the opportunity to get the most roam for your rands and lets you discover places you’d otherwise never visit.
The same goes for traveling locally. By saving on your accommodation, you can chose a region of South Africa and spend much longer exploring and enjoying it, than when you are paying premium. Let’s be honest – most of the time your getaway will be about doing things, especially if you are traveling with your family – and not about hiding away in your bougie hotel room and raiding the minibar.
We have picked a couple of brilliant local “backpacker’s” that will let you see our country from a new angle.
What makes a “backpacker’s” good?
First of all – “backpacking” doesn’t mean you can’t take your convenient wheelie bag. It’s simply a word which means traveling with a more accessible accommodation budget and a more community minded and relaxed approach to your holiday experience.
Location
“Backpacker’s” make even the most premium locations accessible to the average man.
A traditional hotel in central Cape Town or the Southern Drakensberg can be nearly unaffordable if you’re planning an extended stay…By sticking to a backpacker’s you get the location, without the threat of bankruptcy
Vibes (other guests)
“Backpacker’s” are, by their nature, a more relaxed and communal type of accommodation. Many do have single or double/family rooms, but particularly if you are a solo traveller, chances are a bed in a dorm style room is the best option for you. This means that you’ll be much more involved with your fellow guests, and you’ll be able to make connections and build relationships with likeminded travellers.
Proximity to good food or a place to cook your own meals…
With all the money you’ve saved, you can now splurge on your meals (at least a little bit…) but most backpacker’s also have well equipped kitchens allowing you to try your hand at making your own delicious, locally inspired meals.
Safety
Safety is obviously a big thing – whether you are traveling alone or with loved ones. If you pick your accommodation right, and make sure to check reviews and do your homework, there is no reason for your trip to be any less safe than the average hotel or guesthouse stay.
