Home gyms worth it?
Can you craft a super-bod without leaving your house?
In the land before time (aka – before we had streaming on demand), we had Infomercials.
Television segments dedicated to hard sells of anything from Twisting Chopping food prep-tools to Big Green vacuum cleaners. But wait, there’s more!
We are talking about: Home exercise equipment.
A manically energetic man and woman in bright Lycra would spend 15 minutes trying to tell you that what you need for the best body ever was their balancing-ab-crunching-stretch-and-bending-resistance thingamabob.
Home gyms got a bad rep
Thanks to ineffectual and misleading infomercials, home gyms and home exercise routines were mostly overlooked in favour of dedicated workout spaces and programs.
Then came Covid
Even the most unfit among us realised that we needed to do some sort of physical activity to negate the impact of all that pandemic baking. Suddenly the internet was our best friend and YouTube videos of similarly manic Lycra clad influencers had us all doing burpees and air squats and finding new ways to stay fit at home.
What do you really need to keep this up?
Treadmills and other large exercise machines take up space that most of us do not have…But resistance bands, skipping ropes and kettle bells are much easier to manage.
If you take your health seriously, you can have an effective workout routine at home, without sacrificing half of your living space to a rowing machine that costs as much as a small car.
The basics are more than enough
- Kettle bells are versatile and easily available.
- Resistance bands work for all levels of fitness and can safely be used by anyone.
- A skipping rope…well, it’s a skipping rope. Need we say more?
Upgrade your motivation
Once you have your basics, get yourself a sturdy wooden box. Not only is this handy for dips and step ups but flip it over and you’ll be able to store all your stuff in it and out of the way.
Add a large water bottle with hydration goals, a Bluetooth speaker for your pumping tracks and a yoga mat or towel to lay on, and you’re good.
