Make the most of open spaces…
We are blessed with some of the best weather in the world, and even on our coldest days, we can still head outside, just as long as we’ve got our K-way jackets on…
The trend of families engaging in fitness-based hobbies and activities is going strong. These days, school sport means much more than rugby and netball and mountain biking is now something even the youngest family members enjoy.
Because cycling can be so family friendly, and is much lighter on your joints than running, more and more people are taking it up as a family pass time.
Battle the bike-clutter.
As admirable as this might be, this does leave us with a bit of a dilemma: What do you do with all the bikes?
If you have endless storage space and lockup garages – lucky you. But if you are a normal person, with a normal house and a normal number of children, that still means that the average biking-family will have to deal with storing at least three full sized bikes at home.
Bikes in the sky.
One way to store bikes if you don’t use them often, is to install some kind or hook or rack that keeps them up and out of the way. These ceiling-bike storage solutions work well if you have the space for it and keeps your bikes off of the floor, and out of the way.
Before you invest in one though, think about the practicality – keeping one or two bikes like this makes sense, particularly if the people using the bikes can help themselves. But if you have younger kids who want to ride their bikes often, it can become a hassle if they have to ask an adult every time they want their bike.
Air-it
Consider this nifty device, Air-it is a fully remote controlled retractable storage lift system. At the click of a button you can store or access your bicycle.
Use your walls.
Another great way to keep bikes off of the floor and out of your way is to stand them up vertically or horizontally, against a wall, or behind a door/in a guest room or study. There are so many ways to do this, from DIY wooden and metal racks to purpose built setups.
We also love the idea of using all-purpose storage hooks to keep your bikes out of the way. This is a cheap and easy solution, and should you ever get rid of your bikes, you can use them for so many other things.
Go old-school
If you have the space, you can incorporate your bikes into your home’s design. If you have a covered entryway or a patio with a bit of space, why not go for a pretty, old fashioned bike rack. These can be made form wood or metal and you can even make this a multipurpose activity storage spot. If you just want a spot for the bikes, go for a basic frame, but if you have golfclubs and Padel-rackets or other outdoor gear, why not incorporate storage for everything into one space?
We love what Jess Ann Kirby did. She created a whole gear storage mudroom in her home for all her family’s outdoor activity stuff.
Make your own bike rack.
Making your own basic bike rack isn’t that difficult. This can be a fun project for a weekend and depending on the materials you choose its an affordable option.
