Venture out and find your foodie-feet!
In our minds, September is just one sunset away from the 16th of December and we all know that is when the year officially ends.
From here its all garden parties, wedding season and year end functions, and we feel completely ill prepared to deal with this level of socializing just yet.
To help us cope with the sudden explosion of silly season and shake off the last shivers of winter, we have enrolled ourself in BOOTCAMP.
But this is not the “get up at the break of dawn and huff yourself around an obstacle course” kind of bootcamp. This is something much much better.
We’ll be getting fighting-fit, one food festival at a time.
South Africa has long been a world acclaimed foodie destination and we are spoilt for choice when it comes to local producers, crafter, distiller, bakers, and brewers.
We hopped on the food-train and found our favourite food festivals and markets in South Africa:
Western Cape
It is time for the 20th annual South African Cheese Festival. This yearly celebration of exceptional local dairy products flawlessly pairs cheese, wine, music, and family fun! Held over Heritage day long weekend (23 – 25 September) at Sandringham, Stellenbosch, this is the perfect appetizer to kick of your Spring 2023 Food Adventure.

Gauteng
Hazel Food Market in Lynnwood, Pretoria is an institution in Gauteng Foodie Culture. This long running market has a cult following with many locals waking up early each Saturday to spend the morning wondering around the market, grazing and getting inspired as they experience the very best Pretoria has to offer. It has everything from Kombucha to Fudge, Gyros to an old-fashioned master butcher. (This market happens each Saturday, 8am to 2pm, with dogs, kids, and wheelchairs/mobility scooters welcome!)
If you spend more time in Jozi, the Prison Break Market is a perfect spot to find your favourite local fare and relax as you enjoy an extended brunch. The barnyard setting and wide variety of stalls means that everyone is welcome and everyone will find a new favourite food. It has live Music, local MCC’s, cheese, bread and all kinds of meaty treats. Open Sunday from 9am to 4pm. (Look for the entrance at the Outdoor Living Nursery.)
KZN
The Morning Trade artisanal and fresh produce market deserves a standing reservation in your weekend dairy. Held every Sunday from 8am to 1pm, you can get your ingredients for the weeks Sunday evening food-prep or simply feast your way through the different local producers. Look out for the homemade ice tea and wide range of coffee.

Summer foodies are made in Winter!
For optimal event-fitness come December, we suggest you take in at least one market or foodie festival each week and dedicate yourself to finding your new foodie favourites.
Hard work pays off…
Are you going to continue you love affair with Cheese, sign up for the Carb-master class, muscle up to the MCC bars or simply work on becoming a talented all-rounder, jogging between pâtés, seafood, baked goods, fresh fruit and anything sticky that comes in jars?’
Only through hard work and commitment can you become the fittest foodie you can be and if you neglect this crucial re-introduction to epicurean delights and social gatherings, you might injure yourself come Summer.
