Grow yourself a little slice of heaven…
Have you heard about Hydroponics, (Aquaponics) or aeroponics, but just never had the guts to try your hand at high-tech gardening?
What is Aeroponics?
Aeroponics on the other hand grows plants in…air. Yep, no water, no soil…just magical invisible nutrient dense air!
The term aeroponics, meaning “working air,” stems from the Greek words for air, “aer,” and labor, “ponos.” This form of hydroponics involves growing plants without the use of soil. Instead, it relies on air to deliver a nutrient-rich mist to the plant’s roots.
According to Michelle Keller, the head of LivingGreens Farms one of the greatest benefits of aeroponics is the sustainable food security it can provide.
Arable land is shrinking all while earth’s population keeps on growing. Aeroponics can solve this problem and allow for increased food production even in confined spaces.
Ok, so what is Hydroponics?
Growing plants in water instead of soil. Its as simple (and as complicated) as that.
There are many obvious benefits of hydroponics, but by far the most important form a food security point of view is the fact that a well-managed Hydroponics system not only takes up less space, labour, water and resources, but also provides a much higher yield than conventional farming methods.
Obviously, this all makes sense for food production on a larger scale, but what about the average Home Grower…?
HomeGrowers are filling this gap.
Based in Edenvale but with a great online presence, they offer both kinds of – “ponics” as well as conventional gardening items and training on how to get the most out of your compact growing space and your bumper crop of homegrown produce.
If you’ve got a little patch of sunlight you can give your greenest dreams a chance to flourish with one of their innovative small space solutions and before long, you’ll be eating from your own backyard (or stoepie or windowsill…).
Have the space but no sunlight? Well – They have grow lights, vertical garden accessories, worm farms and conventional irrigation solutions.
Even with winter on your doorstep, there’s no excuse for not getting the most out of whatever space you have. Grow your heart out!
