Listen to Trends to Avoid in Afrikaans:
Trends come and go, whether it’s fashion, food or décor. You always have to decide whether the Next Big Thing is something you are willing to shell out for and if the trend even suits your space in the first place. But as trends bob to the surface, other trends fall away. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always happen fast enough, or the trends that do fall by the wayside are not comprehensive enough.
Here are 5 interior design trends that really just need to go away, already!
Maybe you’re not too comfortable yet with choosing furniture pieces. If you’re unsure about which pieces complement each other, it might seem like a good idea to buy a matching 3-piece sofa set and then pick up two ottomans in the same finish. You were going for uniformity, but you landed on boredom. When all the furniture in a room matches exactly, it seems that the design was not thought through. Rather take your time and choose pieces that speak to you as you fill your space. Even if it takes a few months – a well-considered collection of pieces will feel more comfortable to you and look more cohesive to guests.

The curated shelves on Pinterest make us all believe that we can achieve that effortlessly organised look in the kitchen. Unless you’re a neat freak with time, dedication and an eye for detail, open shelves just end up looking messy. Consider choosing one corner of your kitchen for an open-shelf-inspired display area if you’re really into the aesthetic and go with traditionally closed shelves for your dinnerware and gadgets.

Do you have pets or children? Are you and everyone living in your house normal human beings that can become dirty, instead of immortal beings made from marble? If you answered no to the questions above, go ahead and make your whole house white. If, however, you are just one of us mortals and there is ever the risk of dirt touching your pure white sofa or your snowy carpet – spend your money on a colour scheme that makes more practical sense.
But don’t fall for Mr Grey. Seriously – the trend of grey couches, grey bedding, grey curtains, grey carpets and grey everything else just leads to your house looking like a colour vampire has visited and you haven’t had time to change anything. There’s nothing wrong with one or two key pieces in grey, but don’t allow yourself to fall into a dull and lifeless pallet.

The recent trend of pampas grass that TikTok brought to life is a clear indication that we don’t learn from the past. If you’re old enough to have visited grandparents during the ‘80s and early 90’s you would certainly have remembered that this trend was huge with the Boomers. They were probably just as excited to display their dried flowers and field grass since it’s an affordable way to bring texture into your design space. Unfortunately, those little dried guys are veritable dust magnets and almost impossible to clean without breaking. After a few months, they just end up looking dreary and decrepit. Don’t channel your grandparents – rather opt for fresh flowers and plants which lend so much life to a space.

This might seem like a very silly question – but what is the purpose of a door? Well, usually, they act as a barrier against sound, scent and the elements. They also do a great job of creating privacy in a space where such things are necessary.
Don’t get us wrong, barn doors look fantastic in most spaces. And… that’s all. They serve absolutely no practical purpose. Barn doors on a teenager’s room will not save everyone else in the house from bleeding ears when they start blasting their favourite tunes. Barn doors at either end of a draughty corridor will do you no favours when the wind starts howling.
If you’re happy to merely use barn doors as a décor item, go ahead! But don’t expect for one minute that they will serve any purpose other than bringing some farmhouse vibes to your space.
